Lady Liberty is truly larger than life. This was my third visit out to the Statute of Liberty and my first during the colder months. I always visit from the NYC side but a ferry is available from the New Jersey side as well. If you have no interest other than going to the island you can usually get last minute tickets. However, tickets to the pedestal and for those more adventurous, her crown, require reservations in advance. Prior to ferry boarding you go through security which has heightened since 911 and appears more stringent than airports. You just don't have to remove your shoes. As you near Lady Liberty you can see the excitement build as many go on deck to get pictures of her beauty. There is always work going on at the island. It's easily walkable the entire way around and provides magnificent views. You enter the crown and pedestal through a side door of a small gift, but prepared to put almost all of your belongings in a footlocker. There is also a larger gift shop, cafe with healthy food options, the Liberty Bike. Audio tour available. Definitely more crowded in the summer and actually a nice place to picnic with available outdoor seating. Leave early enough so you have time to visit Ellis Island which is included in the cost of your ticket.
