The Statue of Liberty is one of those places that if you have the chance to go and visit then you should. It is a historic symbol and is recognised all around the world. You can get to the island easily but ONLY purchase tickets from inside Castle Clinton in Battery park, and NOT from any vendors outside. Be prepared to go through 2 sets of airport style security though. 1 to get to the island and 1 to enter the statues pedestal. If you wish to climb up inside the statue and visit the crown this is at an extra cost and must be booked around 3 months in advance. There is an elevator up to the top of the pedestal (plus a few steps) and then 162 tight winding steps up to the crown but you can stop and rest at every story if you need to, and at any point you can decide to go back down simply by getting off at a story and going to the steps going down. The torch has been closed off to the public since 1916, but you can see the ladder leading up. Inside the statue you can see the original brown colour of the copper and the facial features etc. The new museum is also taking shape nicely with life size copper face and foot, and the original torch.
