The largest synagogue in Kyiv was opened in 1898 to mark the anniversary of its sponsor, the famous Kiev philanthropist, millionaire-breeder Lazar Brodsky. The building was designed by engineer Georgy Schleifer. Since the mid-1920s, various cultural institutions have been operating in the premises taken away from the Jewish community, in particular, in the 1950s, the City Puppet Theater was located here. At the end of the 20th century, the Brodsky Synagogue again became a house of worship
