I love Wolf Trap, and hope it stays open into the foreseeable future. I have had some bad experiences at Wolf Trap, but the amazing performances outweigh the occasional flop. So, here is the dilemma: what do you do when you are the LEAD SINGER in a band, and you have SOLD OUT Wolf Trap on the Monday before July 4th, AND you have lost your voice?? I cannot even imagine there is a choice to be made...? Well, I know something now I didn't really know before I saw one of my favorite bands, Bare Naked Ladies, play at Wolf Trap this week. Ed Robertson is the frontman of the group because he really is the only member who can carry a tune. Unfortunate for us on a night when Ed has lost his voice. Yes, he made a valiant attempt to allow the "show to go on," but it was not enjoyable for me. From the first song it was apparent his voice was gone, even though he made a good joke about his one raw, bleeding vocal cord that was left, and the fact that he continued to go on with the show: sing and talk through the entire show was brave and stupid at the same time... I know his doctor probably told him straining his already strained vocal cord was not wise at all. I was uncomfortable to know he was suffering for our benefit - and I was uncomfortable that we had paid so much to get "really good seats" for the musical equivalent of an out of tune band... The fact that I would have been unhappy if they had canceled the show, but I was also unhappy that we did not see the show we should have (which is the down side of LIVE MUSIC) left me feeling conflicted. I came to the conclusion that while this really was the only reasonable solution, I still was very disappointed.
