Mecca (Arabic: / ) [2] is an ancient city in the western part of Saudi Arabia. Mecca, formerly known as Bakka, was under the rule of the Hijaz before it became part of Saudi Arabia. Spread over an area of 26 sq. Km, the population in 2012 estimated at 2,000,000 people. During the peak times of pilgrimage to Hajj and Ramadan, the city will have more pilgrims than the population. The Red Sea is about 80 km from Mecca, surrounded by hills. Mecca is located 277 meters above sea level. Medina, another holy city of Muslims, is about 430 kilometers from Mecca. The word mecca in lowercase in English is used to refer to the center of any particular subject. Mecca is an important place of pilgrimage to the Hajj and Umrah, the place where the Qur'an was revealed, the area where the Samsam is located, and the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad.
