*HIGHLY* recommended experience, particularly children. We can t say enough good things about the important work done here and the incredible spirit, dedication and contributions of the handful of full-time staff and the small army of volunteers, who all give of themselves to help loggerhead and other turtles who are so at risk from human overpopulation, human refuse and discarded trash, and boaters and operators of pleasure craft, who think nothing of these enormous, endangered animals who we share waterways with. While we were visiting, a severely injured loggerhead arrived in an emergency, having just been recovered after a distress call. With 10 grisly gashes along its once majestic shell, it s spinal cord was severed, and it was losing fluid and blood with every agonizing breath. The veterinarian specialist and the expert staff did all in their power to triage the great animal, which was writing in pain, but alas they could only move to euthanize it, to allow it to succumb with as little pain, discomfort and fear as possible. We heard that this scene can be repeated 2-3 times a day or just once a week, and that as many as 90% of boat strikes result in a lost turtle. But they also save SO many, and it s incredibly inspiring to see the turtles who are recovering and often released back into the ocean. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and please support it s work with a visit to the fantastic gift shop.
