On 6-Oct-2020, I was at Mercy Hospital for a scheduled surgery with a well-known surgeon. in consultation with the on call doctor on October 11th I was instructed to go to Mercy medical center Emergency Department/ED immediately as there could be a number of things going on, including internal bleeding stemming from complications from my surgery due to sever lower back pain,
The on call Doctor called the Mercy ED to let them know I was going there so they have my history.
My husband and I got to ED at 1129am on 11-Oct. When I arrived there was no other patient in lobby but me, although an hour later the ED started to get busy, patient after patient. I remember every other chair , had a sign next to each, please do not sit here due to covid social distancing protocols. After 3 hours waiting in ED a patient (possibly mentally ill patient) that didn t have a mask on properly came and sat next to me, coughing; I then quietly got up and sat in a different seat. No ED personal, or security officer on duty gave advice to or let that patient know that this siting next to someone is prohibited. Well, 20 minutes later, the man got up and sat next to another patient.
I found this very disturbing, especially when we are in the middle of pandemic. I then went to security to inform him, he was sitting too close to myself and others - I was wondering why no one is correcting the patient.
When I got to the security I found him sounds asleep and he didn t respond to my vocal attempts to wake him so I stood there looking at him for few seconds and he didn t move. At this point I lost all the confidence I had with Mercy Medical Center so I called my husband to come back to take me to another ED at UMD.
My husband called the physician on call and she advised him not to take leave Mercy ED or take me home and my pain could be serious. I waited another 10 minutes and I found the security sounds asleep again for the second time. I report that to the charge nurse and she gave me a number to call for formal complaint. The security guard remained in the hospital and there was nothing done. To whomever is in charge:
1- I waited 3 hours and 10 minutes in ED to just be seen, despite the fact that an on call doctor called and wanted me to be seen soonest. 2- as a patient, I trust in medical professionals to keep me safe - the patient who wasn t wearing mask properly could have covid, he was coughing and not wearing a mask properly - also sitting next to other patients is unacceptable. No accountability. Your security officer was literally sleeping on the job 2 times even after I confront him . Unacceptable and again this is safety issues. It s against CDC guidelines and no one corrected him, even worse, when I confront the security after he woke up, he was extremely rude to me!
3- I called patient relations 2 times and still didn t receive any phone call. That just tell me mercy medical center don t care about the patient feedback or any concern they may have.
It s a shame that Mercy Hospital doesn t follow the CDC guidelines , it s embarrassing and unacceptable. Since I have not received a response, I ve escalated my grievance to other entities to the Medical community.
At the end I want to thank only my nurses and my Gynecology resident who cared for me and showed sympathy during this horrible experience. I would never return to mercy medical hospital and I definitely would not recommend it to anyone.
