I was taken to the Mercy ER yesterday likely with a case of vertigo (I say likely because I was never told officially what it was). The EMS professionals, Ms. McLean and Mr. Philtran, that transported me from my job were extremely helpful, empathetic, tactile, and knowledgeable. When I got to the ER, the visit was okay. Things felt a little rushed, as they generally do in the ER, and some of the tests that they advised they would run were never initiated. I was complaining about chest discomfort and cramping and they never took the electrical picture of my heart or ran my electrolytes like they stated they would. While in the room, two of the nurses seemed to have a disagreement and an argument about who would retrieve my fluids right in front of me. One of them was short with me as if she didn t want to be there (which I understand in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, but it was still quite uncomfortable.) The other nurse was quite kind and helpful. I was given a vertigo medication that I had a bad reaction to, which resulted in convulsion. Mind you, I had only requested to take half the recommended dose, since I am sensitive to medications. When the Dr. Samuel Hsu saw me having convulsions and I told him that I may be allergic to the medication, he passed it off as temporary and essentially said that s not supposed to happen . And wouldn t you know it, he advised that I wait it out. Then when I had to get attention for a nurse to use the restroom, I had to bang on the window for about 5-10 minutes before I could get anyone (who was standing right outside the window in a glass, open office in which everyone could see) to come take out my IV so I could go. The icing on the cake was when I was prescribed the medication that I reacted to so badly. Honestly, as I said before, I understand that the hospitals and their teams are overworked and probably underpaid for their labor, especially in the midst of a pandemic. This was just a very distressing experience which has made me a very concerned and unsatisfied patient.
