We were in Versaille with children aged 8,10 and 12 just before the 1st of May 2019. I attach a photo in front of the entrance for others to see the waiting line. We went straightaway to the gardens which entrance is on the far left side and where actually you can buy a ticket for the gardens very quickly. I suggest to do this first because for us this was better than the indoors of the place. Furthermore, it is cheaper and really something else to see. Inside is pretty much like in other similar places, just very crowded and not comfortable, yes, lots of nice art work but we did not find that fascinating as we were previously to similar places. But gardens are a must see. Now, a tip - on the far right side of the entrance, there is an entrance for unguided groups. The tickets for children are free and much cheaper for adults, you just need to find a group and you can save a lot. We learned that when it was late but hopefully somebody will learn something from our mistakes.
