We had smoke damage from a mattress fire. This company estimator came out assesses the damage and we get a copy of the estimate. Within 2 days that employee found almost $5000 more damage without even revisiting our home. He added windows in closets, shower/tub in half bath, heater in room that didn t exist, cost for moving stove which just happened to be built-in, cleaning cabinet contents that didn t need or get cleaned and believe me the list goes on.
He double-dipped on several items one example is getting paid by the hour for cleaning and then adding/listing everything that was cleaned - resulting in double charges of THOUSANDS of dollars. If I questioned something in particular the charges mysteriously moved into some other charge.
I wouldn t recommend any of the contractors they used to perform the jobs. Several of them lied or couldn t remember what they had done or not done when I questioned what was listed as far as charges. The painter did more damage than was already there from the smoke. We had to redo everything he did and unfortunately once he painted over the popcorn ceiling material he got all over the walls it couldn t be removed.
Luckily we decided to do most of the reconstruction tasks ourselves. If we hadn t I m afraid our home would have been literally destroyed by their inferior workmanship.
I can see why homeowners insurance is so expensive when they allow themselves to be ripped off by reconstruction companies. Just keep in mind some of these estimators get paid commission so the more the estimate the more they pocket. Even though the insurance company is footing the bill please check over the estimate.
