DUPED BY PINEHURST--BUYER BEWARE!
We booked a room at this resort (where we visited once many years ago). Upon making the reservation, I requested a room in the Carolina House (main building), where we had stayed previously. The reservationist said that The Carolina House was full but that she would place our family of four in the Holly House (within walking distance of the resort; I am familiar with). I agreed to this. The day of our arrival comes. A woman called my husband that day and informed him that she is "UPGRADING" us to a condo on the property. My husband (who was trying to finish his workday so that we could leave for our 6-8 hour drive ahead on Labor Day friday) thanked her. When we arrived in Pinehurst at 12:30am in torrential rain from Harvey, after an exhausting 8 hour drive, we were informed that our "upgrade" was several miles away, given a room #, and sent away with directions on an index card. We make our way over there (very dark, unlit roads/apartment complex), only to discover that our "upgraded" room # does not exist! The number that was given to us (1224), is not an existing unit at all! So, we head back to the main resort, Carolina House. We come to learn that the number "1" was symbolic for this condo/apartment area, and that our actual unit was 224. We were ultimately escorted by a kind security guy in a pick-up truck who was embarrassed that even he had difficulty seeing the unit numbers, unlit apartment, etc. After carrying all of our own luggage up the flights of rickety/wooden steps (apartment units built in the 80s for sure), we entered the musty, moldy smelling unit, only to find dead bugs on the floor throughout and four tiny twin beds (very European). The young man at the front desk at 1:00am, though friendly, was not a manager and was unable to do anything to help us. The fact that there is not a night manager on duty in a hotel like this is, in itself, concerning. I am giving one star because we eventually got moved to the Carolina House for our second night because someone no-showed. However, this was a huge hassle overall. BOTTOM LINE: Be very leary if offered a "free upgrade" from this place. We felt tricked and very disappointed. If you are not staying in the Carolina House/Holly House, save your money and stay at the Springfield Suites or Comfort Inn in nearby town.
