Two years ago this summer, both my mother-in-law and my aunt-in-law were admitted here. At the time, if you had asked me if I expected either to be alive in two years, I would've answered negatively. Fast forward two years, both are still here, and their quality of life, while severely limited due to Alzheimer's Disease, is about as high as can be reasonably expected. We advocate consistently on their behalf, and I am sure there are times when the staff cringes at the idea of seeing us there. But they are always cordial to us. The place is much better run, and the staff far more caring and compassionate, than at Strong Memorial Hospital, which, while having a different mission, is nonetheless also part of the URMC umbrella. I won't pretend that everything there has been perfect -- it hasn't. But when it comes to the most important things -- keeping them alive and limiting decline in quality of life, and doing it in a caring and compassionate manner -- they've done an amazing job.
