This airport has got to be in the running for "worst airport experience in the entire world". The place is pure chaos, designed very poorly and is extremely over-capacity. If you are traveling internationally be prepared for an absolute onslaught of problems - many of these caused by the Mexican government.

For starters, if you arrive early in the morning or late at night, you will be met with one of the most incredible immigration lines you've ever seen. I would say over 1,000 people were in line that we waited in - FYI this could take up to an hour to clear. Also, be prepared with the form as they have been known to send people back if they aren't completed correctly when they call you up.

After you make it through immigration, you will need to pickup your bags from the baggage carousel. This is where the fun begins. You will need to wait in another line to pass through "audana" (customs) where you will be met by someone who will ask for another form. Hopefully you have it filled out and ready to go, or guess what? Back to the end.

Once they take your completed customs form, you will have to press a little red button. If you get a green light, congratulations - you get to continue about your business as usual. However, if you press the little button and a red light appears, you will have to have ALL of your bags (including backpacks, carry-on bags, purses, etc.) X-Rayed and sent to yet another station. It was our great misfortune that we ended up experiencing the following step twice (both connections on a round trip flight).

When you get the red light, you will be directed to a table where all of the baggage will be thoroughly inspected by the federal police. They will have you OPEN EVERY SINGLE BAG THEY JUST X-RAYED and they will search through everything. This takes place in the middle of a very busy area, in full view of hundreds of people walking by. Once they are done prying through all of your baggage, which now everyone knows the contents of, you will have the privilege of repacking your baggage again.

IF YOU ARE CONNECTING: Now you will need to walk the baggage another 25 feet or so to another carousel and drop them off so they can continue on to your plane. Then, you need to turn around (180 degrees) and head for the escalator. WHATEVER YOU DO, do not exit through the frosted glass doors. You need to head up the escalator back into the terminals. But guess what? You get to go through security yet again! More X-Rays, more chances for lost or stolen items. We lost our luggage keys going through the scanners. Lucky us :)

If you do accidentally make it through the double doors, you need to head upstairs to check back in with your airline. They will take your baggage if you haven't already dropped it off and direct you to the security lines.

Finally (if you ever make it into the terminal), you will have to find your gate as AeroMexico seems to enjoy not printing the gate number on the tickets themselves. Look for the screens or go to their website to check the flight status. By the way, don't expect to get any work done in there as there is constant chatter on the intercom that seems to be turned up to maximum volume; not to mention all of the people clamoring about and yelling. Also, finding a seat during peak hours will be very difficult but you could always try a restaurant.
