I had surgery on Jan 31st at SGMC. Most of the same day surgery nurses prepping me for surgery were excellent. However, the woman who did an EKG was not considerant of my privacy at all. She hooked everything up and pulled my gown down past my waist. Then, a nurse walked out of the room and left the door wide open, completely exposing me to everyone in the hallway. It wouldn't have taken much effort to cover me up for the duration of the test. The recovery room staff and my doctor, Dr. Davis were both wonderful. I returned 2 weeks later to have surgery again and was admitted to the hospital. The 3rd floor nurses were absolutely negligent and horrible from the time I arrived in the room. The first two nurses were BATHED in perfume or lotion, not sure which. It is listed in my chart and they were also told verbally that I have asthma and have a severe sensitivity to fragrances. When I mentioned it, I was told I could be moved to another floor, but that there was not a nurse in the entire hospital who was not wearing perfume. How ridiculous! I was then given masks to wear when someone came in. That is not an effective way to prevent exposure to excessive fragrance. Everyone was very short and snappy with me after I said something about it. It is highly unprofessional for someone in health care to come to work with so much perfume on.
It was also a task to get my pain meds or anything else I needed. It took forever for them to respond. They were completely unconcerned about me. It was a terrible experience and I was so glad to be able to leave there. If I need medical help in the future, I'll choose somewhere else. Training in compassion and patient care would be invaluable.
