California Science Center is a large, diverse space dedicated to science and learning. Free to enter (donations are welcome), it has everything from touch pools and fish to rooms that show animals of the desert. There are many interactive exhibits, which is good for children and fun for adults. The Space Shuttle has a fee and is an additional exhibit, but the majority of the California Science Center is free.
This place gets busy, and early (probably because it's free), and it's not as cohesive as the Natural History Museum.
Pro tip - f you're looking for food, there is a full "food court" by the rear entrance of the center.
