The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was established on March 2, 1959. The main campus of ITB is currently the location of the first technical high school in Indonesia. Although each higher education institution that initiated ITB has its own characteristics and mission, all of them have an influence on the development that led to the establishment of ITB.

The history of ITB began at the beginning of the twentieth century, at the initiative of the ruling community at that time. The original idea of its establishment was primarily intended to meet the needs of technical personnel which became difficult due to the disruption of relations between the Netherlands and its colonies in the archipelago, as a result of the outbreak of the First World War. De Techniche Hoogeschool te was established on July 3, 1920 with one faculty de Faculteit van Technische Wetenschap which only had one department de afdeeling der Weg en Waterbouw.
