Wow! Though most of the original palace was destroyed during the French revolution, this is still worth a visit. We took a train from Paris to Versailles which was about 20 mins or less in duration. Once you get off the train the palace is about a 10 minute walk. We arrived before 9 AM (when the chateau opens) and there was already a long line about 3/4 of the way down the cobble stoned entrance. We waited in line for nearly 50 minutes. This was the length of the line even though we previously purchased our tickets online. The palace gets very busy! I used a free audio tour from Rick Steves audio guides Europe app. They also offer audio guides included with your ticket. We were able to see the Opera room on the ground floor but the majority of the tour was on the second floor. Rooms that have areas roped off, can become very crowded! I found it was useful to walk along the back wall or to walk to the end of the room and then look along the edge of the roped off areas. The crowd tends to bottleneck at the entrance of the rooms. We went on a Tuesday, when the Music fountain show runs in the Garden (when you have to pay to visit the Garden). We were there for over an hour and never saw a fountain show. The Gardens are beautiful but not worth paying 9.50 of the fountain show doesn't run.
