I found the 'hospitality' at Ommegang Brewery to be very poor. I recently attended a "Fire Pit Friday" event at Ommegang, where they have live music and a bonfire. At one point I was near the bonfire and it was burning low, so I threw a pallet on the fire, as no one had tended it in awhile (the bonfires are fueled by discarded wooden pallets, which are free). An Ommegang employee, Wayne, approached me and scolded me for putting a pallet on the fire (there are no signs saying that patrons are not allowed to do this), and told me he had a limit on the number of pallets that could be burned that was imposed by the management. He said he was a bouncer and I should leave because I threw a pallet on the fire. He basically was trying to intimidate me and make me think I needed to leave because he said so. I told him I don't think so, and go get someone in authority if he thinks I can be thrown off the premises for throwing a pallet on the fire when there wasn't even any notice that it is 'against the rules.' Anyway, I didn't leave and there was nothing he could do about it, but it makes me wonder if I want to attend another Ommegang event if their staff act like corrupt police. Ommegang is a Belgian company, but I have been to Belgium and I seriously doubt that a patron of Duvel in Belgium (Ommegang's parent company) would be treated with as much disrespect as I received in Cooperstown, USA.
