Casper xx Review of Yakitori Boy & Japas Lounge

I went with my classmates and chef for our class outing. I was initially impressed by the decor and lighting (re: low, moody, intimate), but throughout the night, found it bothersome and straining on my eyes. The seating was tight for a reservation of 12, and we found ourselves a lot closer than usual. The food + cocktail menus were fairly easy to read, the cocktail menu being easier to understand than the former. Even without descriptions, the servers were readily able to answer any questions we had about the food.
That being said, that seemed to be the extent of their service. We had a few people late for dinner, and you could just see how bothered they were. It was clear by the end of the night they were annoyed with us, and made us wait at least 30 minutes for the check, and another 10 minutes to process everything.
For my dinner, I order the mini ramen with pork, the spicy salmon roll, the spicy toro roll and an Angry Orchard. The mini ramen with pork was flavorful, the broth was well balanced and the pork was tender. I would have liked the noodle-to-broth ratio to be a bit higher (it seemed like there was a lot more broth than noodles), but overall, it was enjoyable. The spicy salmon roll left a lot to be desired. It was plain, not spicy at all. Palatable, but I wouldn't order it again. The spicy toro roll was the wildcard for me as I had never had it before. I enjoyed it. Again, it wasn't spicy as advertised, but it had a salty, briny flavor that kept me going back for more.
Overall, the night was enjoyable, and the food was alright, but I wouldn't go back on my own.
