We took the train across the bridge in the dead of winter. The icicles hanging from the suspension bars were incredible! They would split a homeless person in two if they fell. The train was great. It had a dinner car and bar car, so I ordered a Gibson just like Cary Grant would, but they were out of mint. It takes the train several minutes to cross the bridge because of all the donkeys. Donkeys have traditionally lived on the bridge since the first span was built in 54AD. Local legend has it that if the donkeys leave the bridge, it will collapse exactly one year later! Wow! In the very middle of the bridge there is a memorial to the men who built the current green version. 945 men were killed when the balsa wood version in the original plans caught fire. They decided then not to let Bantu tribesmen design the bridge and a reputable architectural firm was hired and they recommended steel instead. The bridge has the capacity to send 1,200,434 cars, 13 trains and 2 Zeppelins each day, making it the 5th most efficient bridge in San Francisco. All in all the Golden Gate Bridge is a large steel bridge across an expanse of water.
