i had a rt tkr on 10-13-2020. the check in process of my surgery date was very smooth, until my surgery was complete & i was transferred from the recovery to my room. it was very well communicated & twice confirmed of the pain treatment my doctor & I had agreed on. it was apparently noted in my chart as i observed the check in nurse & doctor refer to my chart & mentioned my pain treatment plan. however, when i recovered from anesthesia i notified the nurse 3 times that the sensation was returning. according to the pre-op intructions this is important information to be communicated to the nurse as it prompts the nurse to begin pain meds. on the 3rd time i notified the nurse my feeling was returning she finally acknowledged my statement and stated she will get my pain medicine and referred to it by it's name. i stopped her & corrected her about my pain treatment. she then called my doctor's nurse to clarify the treatment protocol. my doctor's nurse responded that was not the doctor's normal treatment for his patients. she didn't even refer to my chart with the doctor's office. if she had done this she would have seen the notes by the doctor of the approved pain treatment. the hospital nures administered the standard pain treatment because i am now in severe pain. the nurse's changed during the day and each nurse, a total of 3, i told my story of the pain treatment i was to recieve. the 3rd nurse did finally decide to pick up the phone & instruct the doctor's nurse to have a real conversation with the doctor rather than assuming usual protocol. however, by answered prayers, my doctor happened to be on the hospital floor and the nurse recognized him. she clarified my pain treatment with him.
i am not so mad with the hospital nurse's as i am with my doctor's nurse. however, they do have a responsibility in this miscommunication. i am confident my hospital chart had the correct pain treatment noted as verified by the check in nurse and the doctor himself. but not a single nurse would review my chart for this information. their in action caused me unnecessary pain in my recovery. i will never go back to that hospital to be treated by such incompetent nursing staff.
