This place is a must visit when in US. We went up to the pedestal and tickets had to be booked online at least a month in advance if boarding the ferry at Battery park. There are ferry's departing from Liberty state park in NJ, I have been from both sides NY and NJ and I'll vouch that the crowd is much lesser from NJ side. Security takes lesser time. The Ellis Island museum is a good too.
