We took the Liberty and Ellis Island Ferry to both islands. First stop is Liberty Island. I'd recommend getting on the right side of the boat, so you can get a good view and photo of Lady Liberty with Manhattan in the background. You will have a second chance on the way out (but from the left side). There is a small cafe on Liberty Island if you need a bite to eat or coffee. I would also recommend the free audio guide tour walk around the island, lots of fun facts.
