The best piece of advice I can give is to get here as early as possible and avoid weekends and Tuesdays (when the Louvre is closed). We arrived before 8 AM on a Thursday in July and were the first people in line for the security check (by the time we left, around noon, the queue was enormous and probably took about 2 hours to get through). We had Paris Museum Passes so at least did not have to buy tickets. Even though we got there early, by the time we were actually inside the palace, it was still fairly crowded, but not yet wall-to-wall people so there were still opportunities to take photos without other tourists in them.

Prepare to be astounded by the extreme opulence. The audio guide is free and worth getting.
