The magnificent palace belonged to the French royal family from 1682, under Louis XIV, and continued as royal residence till the French revolution in 1789. It is a UNESCO heritage site, and now owned by the state. The palace, along with the adjacent garden, is now a major tourist attractions. It was looted during the French revolution. Annual visitors are around 10 million.
