As part of our family Christmas celebration, with everyone coming from different areas of Ontario, we decided to get together in a somewhat central point and Guelph was it. A look on Google Maps led our search to this Delta hotel for it's convenient access, as well as proximity to restaurants, etc..
Our room selections included two king suites and a one bedroom suite (three rooms in total). All the rooms were equally clean and well equipped. The hotel itself is of the all concrete construction type, making for a more quiet structure over less expensive wood framed.
Our stay was comfortable and enjoyable, save for three little issues; The washroom facilities in our king suite was configured in such a way so that the vanity was in one space, with a separate room for the toilet and tub/shower. For a guy like me with a 6'-2" frame, I found the toilet very tight to the adjacent wall. The shower stall was of the one-piece configuration which makes for easy cleaning, but made it dark and a little claustrophobic. I appreciate the cleanliness side of the equation, but a pot light in the shower space might go a way to help brighten things up...?
One other issue was the fact that when I booked the rooms, I was told that if our kids (who were staying in the other two rooms) arrived at the hotel before us, they could check in to their rooms right away. That story changed upon their arrival, as they were both made to wait until I, the guy who's credit card the reservations were made under, was there to show the card. Despite my calling to talk to the manager, there was no way they could get in. Frustrating, as I mentioned to the manager, we paid in advance and in good faith for the very rooms that our kids couldn't use. Sorry, 'Policy' was the reply. Score one for the otherwise trusting customer...
Lastly, as this was a family celebration, we got the larger one bedroom suite so we could all be together for Christmas. Unfortunately, this proved to be an adjoining room. Unaware of that, we received a sudden knock on the door from no less than a security guy telling us to be quiet. Hmm. A call to the front desk informed me that they had received a complaint on the floor, which we assumed was from the adjoining room. I pointed out that we had no TV or music playing and that the only 'noise' was no more than understandingly elevated voices from a family - including two little granddaughters - enjoying the evening together. As well, it was well before the understood quiet time. Perhaps a less heavy handed call to the room to make us aware of the complaint would have been a lot more appropriate than sending up a security guard?? We are reasonable and respectful folks and felt somewhat belittled by the experience...
Four stars for the venue, but only two for those in charge of policy making and tact. I feel that both need review.
