Sun Yat-Sen University (English: Sun Yat-sen University, SYSU), Sun Yat-sen in Guangzhou created a "literary school" Guangdong University (renamed Zhongshan University in 1926), "Wu School" Whampoa Military Academy, respectively, to foster national construction, The national revolutionary talents have far-reaching influence on the history of the Republic of China.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in 1952, the adjustment of Chinese university departments, Lingnan University and the former National Sun Yat-sen University merged to form Zhongshan University, and the main campus of Sun Yat-sen University moved to the former Lingnan University Kangyuan Campus. Sun Yat-sen University is now a university directly under the Ministry of Education and a national key university. Beginning in the fall of 2009, Sun Yat-sen University began to implement a three-semester system in a freshman year.
After the cross-strait division, the Kuomintang government reopened two universities of the same name in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
