I volunteered at DCHS for a year & a half, and adopted my cat from them. The staff and volunteers really care about the animals, and celebrate every time one is adopted. The animals are well cared for (clean cages, good food, vet care, individual attention, etc.) and given special training if needed (for instance, if a cat is very shy, s/he is gently encouraged to feel more comfortable with people). The adoption fees help cover the costs involved in caring for the animals while they're at the shelter (shots, neutering/spaying, food, etc.), with donations covering the balance. DCHS is a wonderful organization that helps animals and people find each other.
