My friend and I decided to try a beginner commercial Jazz class. We were told by the receptionist that as we had 15+ years Irish dance experience that beginner was the class for us. We quickly realised that it was far too advanced and that the rest of the dancers were very experienced and used to the technical jazz dance terms. The teacher didn t seem to have much interest in differentiating the class to suit our level. We decided to leave when she asked us if we could speak English in a patronising way when we were struggling with the material. Thankfully we were allowed to take a Basic class which was much more suited. The substitute teacher for the basic class was much more considerate of the various abilities in the class. Despite this, if you don t have any dance experience, even the basic class could be too much. You re expected to be able to do the full splits even at the lowest basic level. Makes me wonder what advanced is like. The basic class was also VERY overcrowded.
