We came across this folly on a walk in the area. Recently restored and opened to the public in July 2014 (check opening times as not open every day) it is a magnificent castle built in the 1780s by a grieving widow as a memorial to her late husband. There is a small exhibition of historical interest and very knowledgeable guides who are all volunteers. The views from the top are spectacular and well worth the climb up the 86 step spiral staircase although on the day of our visit the visibility was poor after a day of almost relentless rain! There is a small teashop with outside seating areas. The tea and chocolate cake were very welcome and set us up for the last section of the day s walk.
