We went on a field trip Sunday to Marble Creek Farmstead in Sylacauga to educate ourselves further on sustainable farming. We have found a real gem just an hours drive from Birmingham and we had to find out more about their business.
Matthew and Jesie Lawrence were kind enough to give us a tour of their farm and we were in constant awe. They really took time to thoroughly and sometimes philosophically answer all of our questions, and did not complain at any time about the work we were keeping them from. Not only do they raise a myriad of livestock (hogs, chickens, ducks, goats, rabbit, cows, and I am sure I am forgetting something) but just as important, if not more, they own the USDA certified processing facility too! If you do not already know, it is extremely rare that the farmer has complete control of his/her livestock from birth to slaughter. We are talking about only a handful in the entire country, and we have one just down the road!
