The University of Hong Kong, or HKU, is a public research university located in Pok Fu Lam in the western half of Hong Kong Island. The school was established in the colonial period of 1912 and officially opened on March 11 of the following year. It is the first higher education institution in Hong Kong. At the beginning of its establishment, it was the only university in the UK in East Asia. The predecessor was the Chinese Western Medical College, which was established in 1887. The school later evolved into the University of Hong Kong Medical School. Together with the College of Liberal Arts and Engineering, it is considered to be its founding school.
