Jacqueline Burgette Review of The Mansion on Forsyth Park

The rooms and facilities are gorgeous. We also love the location right on Forsyth Park next to the kids playground and splash pad. The only downside, which consistently let us down throughout our entire stay, was the poor (and sometimes rude) service. More details below:
1) At check in, they couldn t get the keycard to work after three different attempts. This is quite a tough entry to a hotel stay with two fussy children wailing at the hotel room door far beyond bedtime. The front desk person finally came up themselves and had to open the door to our hotel room. The entry key at the door was malfunctioning.
For our trouble, we asked for free parking so we could get the kids to bed ASAP. They heartily agreed. Fast forward to checkout, the parking was on the receipt. Apparently it hadn t been communicated to the other staff. It took a discussion to make it right.
2) They gave us breakfast meal tickets to use at the restaurant. Both the hotel front desk and the restaurant staff couldn t figure out if the breakfast meal tickets were worth $16 all together or $16 per person. After asking us to go back and forth (with a stroller and two kids and a wheelchair elevator that they couldn t get to work for us)...oh, and while I was mid-breastfeeding...the server at the restaurant finally volunteered to walk himself over to the front desk to ask how much the breakfast voucher was worth. He came back and let us know that it was $16 per person. We ordered accordingly and then were surprised when the bill came and the vouchers were worth $16 all together (or $8 per person). This was not good communication.
3) Finally, late check-out. We asked for late checkout when we checked into the hotel. They said yes, late check out at 4pm. We confirmed late checkout the day of our departure. Then, when we came back to the hotel for the kids nap a little after noon, there was a hotel staff person at our door asking why we had not checked out. We said we confirmed late checkout with the front desk this morning. He went away and we put the kids down for a nap. So, this comes to the reason I m writing the review. We just had two more people come into the room or knock loudly at the door, waking the kids up and saying that they were not informed that we had late checkout. To make it worse, one staff member said that if I m unhappy that they came by then the least I could have done is put a do not disturb sign on my door. Ok, I don t know where my do not disturb door sign is and couldn t find it. For some reason, we didn t have one in our room. So, she gave me one from an adjoining room. Either way, the kids are up from their nap cranky, we didn t get a chance to rest before a long drive out of Savannah, and this could have been avoided with better communication and more hospitality from the hotel staff.
Update: I ran into the the front desk manager at check out and she did a fantastic job listening and making amends for our experience. Next time, I ll contact the manager as soon as things start to go south; and I have faith that she ll address the issues. Because of this proper response, I would consider staying here again.
