Be prepared to be called to the desk if You return a book that has any damage to it. You will be paged down to the return counter and just Like professor umbridge did to Harry potter you will have to write on your hand with a metal quill "I will not tell lies" because they Will Not believe you if you plead your case that you never would do such a thing like some ignorant person did to my family, thank you for allowing your child to ruin the book, hence ruining my day off as I stood at the return counter wondering what the hell just happened. If you unknowingly return a book that the library staff failed to check before it went out the door and it is damaged prepare yourselves to be accosted by the overhead page system as you are comfortably ambling through the soups and stews cookbook aisle looking for the newest instant pot book --which I never did rent out after the sheer embarrassment I suffered while being eyed up and down, the aforesaid colored in book shoved under my shocked nose as I stood there, becoming more and more redfaced and indignant, silently disdaining looks from other patrons, library staff eyes boring down at me scowling like "we KNOW it was YOU!" I mean really? Please do us all a favor--if you damage a book please own up to it and pay for it or offer to replace it. Dont dishonestly return it for another person to take the brunt of your doing. And library staff please dont treat people like they are criminals! We are not all jerks who would do that to a book, that is why good people -like some of us- are still using and respect the library and what it can offer to us as a sanctum to sit and relax, unwind and enjoy a good book. That day I was accosted last week for something i did not do was far from enjoyable. So while you are training your staff to check and recheck books for damage before they leave the building, train them to be kinder and not abrasively rude and accusatory, check the account for past offences before you assume and accost a person and roll your eyes as they state they did not do what you are saying they did, and especially not in front of their child and other patrons. Speaking to the director helped dull the anger and shock, but I don't think the bad taste this library's staff left that day by how I was treated will ever go away. Remember people wont remember anything more about you than how you treat them. Now all I will envision walking in to the return desk is the possibility of anger, aggravation, tight lipped wrinkled faced scowling staff where there once was a magical feeling where everyone was smiling and happy and you were all there, to share the love of the written word on paper, not to be accused of vandalism. It was a good lesson to me that times surely are changing and people are less likely to uphold fair treatment and respect.
