Gary Chow Review of Sugar Bowl Resort

Retro ski resort with enough upgrades to be comfortable. Good as a family resort. Parked by the gondola (4 person enclosed cars). The line to the gondola is reminiscent of the Splash Mountain ride at Disneyland; it looks like a wooden saw mill. The drawback of this lift is when you get off the gondola. Three flights of metal stairs lead you, your skis and poles down to the snow. I guess the alternative is to park on the Judah side and skip the gondola altogether.
On a stormy day, most of the accessible intermediate and advanced runs were distinguished mostly by whether it had been plowed the night before. There are a number of "ski through the trees" trails and paths that are fun for the family, with the remainder being undulating runs or steep chutes - no real open bowls. Tops of the mountains were engulfed in the clouds and mist, making visibility basically zero, so I did not get a chance to ski what many say is the best part of Sugar Bowl.
Maybe it was because most people were concentrated on just a few lifts because of the weather, but the lift lines were pretty busy and not really well regulated. Operators leave the guests to form into groups of 4 by themselves most of the time. Single line was not very efficient. Two lines merged to one, and the attendant (when there) would not group 4 singles onto one chair, so the single line wouldn't necessarily move every cycle.
So in summary, if it isn't crowded and the weather is good, this would be a good place to take the family skiing. It costs less than the mega resorts, has the necessary amenities, and while not quite entirely modern (stairs in boots are just no fun!), is worth a visit.
