Palace of the island
Palace of the island
Or shortened the age of tents or what is now called the Marriott Hotel
On the occasion of the opening of the channel, a legendary celebration was held to impress guests of kings and emperors. The royal palace was built by order of Khedive Ismail, the ruler of Egypt, to host the invited guests at the cost of three quarters of a million Egyptian pounds at the time.
The architectural style of the palace reflects the passion of the Khedive for the modern classical architecture of Europe, where Austrian architect Franz Julius (Franz Beck later) and De Corle del Rosso (who also designed Abdeen Palace) used the palace to design. He was contracted to the German Karl von Debecch for interior design where he was responsible for designing and manufacturing furniture fabrics, curtains and all interiors.
Khedive Ismail invited the emperors and kings of Europe, including the empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III, whom he wanted to dazzle after he chose to be the guest of honor at the opening of the ceremony.
Over the years, famous celebrations were held at the palace, including the wedding of my son Khedive Ismail, which lasted 40 days, the wedding of the daughter of Prime Minister Nahas Pasha in the 1930s, and the wedding of King Farouk and Queen Nariman in one of the Nile boats opposite the palace.
From palace to hotel
Since the palace turned into a hotel, the palace has changed several times. In 1879, under the name of the island palace hotel, it was confiscated by the state because of the accumulated debt as the hotel was annexed to the Egyptian hotel company.
In 1919, the palace was sold to Habib Latifallah, a Syrian dignitary who settled in Cairo. In 1961, during the reign of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, the palace was nationalized as Omar Khayyam Hotel.
In the seventies, the palace administration was transferred to Marriott International, which renovated the palace and equipped it with all the amenities suitable for a five-star hotel, and added two newly built towers, opened in 1982 with a capacity of 1087 rooms and suites.

The hotel consists of 20 floors and more than 1000 luxurious suites and rooms, with private balconies, in the center of six acres of gardens overlooking the Nile. The hotel offers a variety of gastronomic specialties in 14 restaurants, including French, Japanese and other cuisine. Services include a world class casino, health club, indoor and open swimming pool and tennis courts.
The hotel also has a large meeting room area which accommodates groups of 10 to more than 1,000 people in an area of 35,553 square feet of the finest meeting and banquet halls in Cairo. Situated directly on the Nile, the hotel is close to the Egyptian Museum, Cairo Opera House and attractions.
