On November 12, 2019 I had the pleasure of spending some time in the OR with my Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Cory Mark and his team while they performed a little bit of reconstruction on my left shoulder. I have had the same basic surgery about 12 years earlier at another facility so I had a good understanding of what was going to take place and was familiar with the post-op scenario. I had always been told that shoulder surgery was one of the most painful surgery's on the list and I would have to agree. I had put this procedure off as long as I could and it just came time to bite the bullet. Surgery was scheduled, the day arrived, and I was ready to get this over with. All went well in pre-op and everyone involved stopped by to go over all of the details and to address any questions or issues that I might have. The last thing that I remember was being wheeled into the operating room and being told that the first bit of anesthesia was on its way. In what had to be no more than 5 minutes i was awake and getting ready to head to the house. The first thing I remember doing when I got home, even before I felt any acute pain, was taking a couple of pain pills to get ahead of the coming unavoidable pain that I had experienced the first time around. The problem I had was the intense level of pain that I was expecting just never showed up. Now don't get me wrong here. There was pain when I did something that I shouldn't have done. There was pain when getting dressed and undressed but that was because of the motions that I went through when dressing. As long as I followed the post op orders and kept my arm in the sling and the cool pack strapped to my shoulder, I was never really uncomfortable. This second shoulder operation was in noway comparable to the first. There is no doubt that newer technology and medicine had something to do with the difference but I truly attribute the success I was having to the abilities of Dr. Cory Mark. Through all of my contact with the doctor I experienced a high level of compassion/caring and an abundance of concern for my issues. He has a positive attitude along with a great personality. I hope I never have to go through another surgery, but if Dr. Mark is involved I know that I will be in good hands.
