This symbol of America has been used and, to quote the museum in her base, exploited since her creation. As such, I was a bit jaded, I think, about the whole experience until my daughter asked to visit it on her birthday. So, we went, and I have to admit that the enormity of this edifice, the sheer size of her, put into perspective the enormous efforts that those who helped create her went through. Those efforts were but a nod toward what she stood for, though, and being in her shadow helped me to understand just what she really meant: hope. Hope for people fleeing interminable situations in their home country. Hope that, maybe, things can be safer for their children elsewhere.
