Massive queue but by going to the ticket office in a building to the left we were able to buy a timed ticket. It cost the same and allowed us to enter only 5 minutes later - to the obvious annoyance of those who had queued for a good hour in the hot sun. Some shade for those queueing would be a good idea.
Versailles is fabulous but you could imagine why the peasants revolted. Clearly expense not spared. A single day is not enough to see everything, including the gardens, so either plan for 2 days or research beforehand and target what you want to see.
Catering is very expensive inside - a small macaroon was more than 2 Euros; so be warned.
