This was some show. It started light heartedly, with familiar songs and funny stunts that perplexed me. I was trying to find a common thread, a point, really. But it all came together at the end, with the final song. The handicapped fiddler rises, like a Phoenix, from the wheelchair and plays a long dirge, a monody that resonates with your tears. Then they all break into it; El ataba gzaz wl sillem naylon. The step is made of glass and the ladder of nylon. The way they sombrely sang it, as in a funeral precession, with the crack down on the demonstrations in the background, you couldn't miss what it was about. How precarious. How fragile is the situation. Boy, I'll never hear that song in the same way ever again.
