I almost bought a Volt at Victory Chevrolet today....

I almost bought a Volt at Victory Chevrolet today. I started at the AAA website looking for a no-hassle price on a Volt. When I filled out the form AAA automatically sent my information to three dealers. Victory didn t have the lowest price but they had a Craigs List ad with a new Volt for $169/mo lease. That seemed reasonable and a guy named Matt had left me an email message so I called him to make an appt.

Being somewhat obsessive, before going to meet Matt I checked the Kelly Blue Book value of my trade-in, the federal and state rebates and calculated the net present value of the lease. Like I said, obsessive. The $169 lease price seemed about right given the $7500 rebate.

So we met Matt, drove the car, and went to Matt s cubicle. He took my name and address and walked out without saying anything. My wife and I wandered around for a while, got some coffee, looked at Corvettes and wandered back to Matt s place. Eventually he came back and offered us a lease of $189. Blah, blah excuses, I said no, $169 or I walk. Matt ambled off somewhere came back and said OK. He probably doesn t know that I am, at this point, really irritated.

So I said we have a deal if you will give me KBB trade in for my car. Matt once again ambles off, this time with my car keys. Another long wait and here s the offer: $2000 below KBB trade in. So I stood up and started to leave. Wait, wait he says or some such. "Give me two minutes". I said OK but I ll be out by my car. A few minutes later some other guy comes out and offers me $500 below the blue book trade in value, which is about $3000 below what Blue Book says the retail price should be. They want to make $2500 on my trade-in.

So I went there for a no-hassle price and spent about an hour playing the usual game. If they had made the final offer to me to start with I would have a Volt in my garage right now.
