Was sent to Borgess ER with my husband from his urgent care doctor with a preliminary diagnosis of appendicitis. It was 7:30 in the evening and the urgent care facilities didn't have the proper equipment to test for appendicitis.
We checked in with the front desk and there were approximately 15 other patients in the waiting room. It was a Monday night. Immediately they took him back for triage and to draw his blood work then sent us back out to the waiting room. My husband had a fever and felt terrible and being that appendicitis is a serious condition, we anticipated we would be seen soon. Wrong. 12:30 am (5 hours later) I finally approach the girl at the front desk who had been rude to everyone prior to me checking on the status of their own cases. I was informed that "Bronson went on diversion and Borgess is doing everything they can to expedite everyone through. But because Bronson isn't seeing patients, they [Borgess] had to pick up the slack." I asked if they received the blood work results to see if a nurse could at least tell us if there was infection? "Nope." Anyhow, at 2:30 am (now 7 hours later) there is one other person in front of my husband to be seen. At this point people had either been seen or turned away at the door. (We even saw a guy come in complaining of chest pain and being short of breath told "it would be a couple hours before he could be seen!") The girl at the front desk then told me that they were too full and they had no where to move patients from the ER, therefore my husband would likely not be seen until at least 7am - almost 12 hours after we first arrived.
I was livid. My husband at this point could barely talk and was clearly in bad shape. She and I could visibly see that and STILL they would not accommodate him. When I said I was taking him to Bronson, she said "Bronson will be in worse shape. They've been on diversion all night." I told her I would gladly take the chance and would never step foot in Borgess ER again.
Went to Bronson - there were ZERO people in the waiting room. They got us right back and within 10 minutes my husband was back getting a CT scan to confirm the diagnosis of what was now a RUPTURED appendix. Icing on the cake? Bronson informed us they were never on diversion that night. Not once. We were lied to and treated rudely by the ER front desk staff at Borgess ER. We received much better care at Bronson and will go there for any of our healthcare needs.
I would like to think this is an isolated incident and that they were just having a bad night, but since I've told a few friends/family about our story, I have heard more of the same happening to others.
There are two major hospitals in our town competing for business. Borgess is not even making it a competition. The answer is clear, go to Bronson!
