I recently purchased a 08 Honda Civic that I am told is out of the warranty period for the paint recall. The local Lucas Honda dealer told us to go to a certain paint repair facility they utilize to get an estimate and that they would then submit to Honda District Recall Mgr to see if he would honor the recall on my vehicle though the Honda recall system indicated it was not under the warranty protection.
I am the third owner who recently purchased the vehicle from a previous owner. I knew of the recall for defective paint application on Honda vehicles where Honda shortcut the painting process to avoid EPA fines. The proper painting process was essentially circumvented improperly to avoid further fines. This meant a business decision to improperly paint cars to avoid continued fines. I have no idea whether or not the previous owners were notified of the paint recall though it is apparent on the vehicle roof and trunk that it has been like this for some time. I can only assume they were not. All I know is that the car was eligible to be repainted under the recall and I guess Honda is counting on missed notices by customers to save them some of the recall expense and headaches. I was told by the dealer service rep that the District Honda Recall Manager was denying painting my vehicle under the recall program. The effected areas were clearly not painted to the proper thickness (a mil reading was taken which shows conclusively that the paint was improperly painted). I have bought two vehicles from Honda before but with their lack of good faith to remedy a paint problem they created, I will not be able to consider their products in the future. I wonder how many others Honda is hoping will miss the paint recall notice so they can save themselves money by not remedying an issue they created.. This is clearly a problem that was on the car for some time but for whatever reason (which I assume was lack of notice) was not taken care of although it had been in several times to Honda dealers for maintenance and they never told the previous owners of the paint recall issue.
