Messed up my bike, then quoted more than I paid for it to fix it.

Had a bike I rode for over 6 years with 0 problems. Took it to Velo Bike Shop to have new pedals installed. They told me most of bike parts are mismatched and need to be replaced. I've agreed to partially replace some (rear wheel in particular) but not all because it was too expensive and I didn't see a good reason to replace parts that were already working fine... Next day I take it for a ride, as I am starting uphill transmission just explodes with bolts and gears flying in all directions. They quote me more than what I paid for it.

Sure could be a bad coincidence, or maybe they haven't tightened everything properly after replacing rear wheel - who knows? But I am now $200 down and have a broken bike. They refused to provide any discount, just shrugged their shoulders and told me I should've replaced everything on the list (and transmission wasn't even on that list).
