The seed for the this education, conservation, rehabilitation, and scientific center was started over 40 years by Eleanor Fletcher known locally as the "Turtle Lady". Eleanor had a real estate business in the area and she became enamored of the sea turtles on the beach. As she began to study the turtles she quickly began to realize that the hatchlings were in danger from man made development in the area.
Eleanor felt the best way to help the turtles was to educate children and the public and so in 1983 the Children's Museum of Juno Beach was born. After another incarnation in 1990 the current space that houses the center was opened in 2007. The new green facility includes research labs, a veterinarian clinic, classrooms, exhibit halls, outdoor rehabilitation tanks, and a gift shop. They suggest a $5 per person donation to tour the center. While suggested it is by no means mandatory. The money you donate and spend in the gift shop is used to help the turtles. If you look on their web site you can see a list of the current turtle patients as well as view them through a turtle cam. Another way you can help the turtles is by financially sponsoring a specific turtle. Also on the web site is a calendar listing all kinds of events like kids programs, tours, birthday parties, story times, and camps. In keeping with Eleanor's original idea to educate the children in order to ensure the sea turtles survival the center offers a lot of great kids programs.
Although sadly Eleanor is no longer with us the effort to save sea turtles lives on through the vision she had to create this amazing center. Inspired by her love for the sea turtles you can come here and see an army of volunteers carrying on her precious work. Thanks to Eleanor Juno beach has one of the most active sea turtle nesting areas in the entire world!
