Took our car here as broke down on holiday and mechanic up north thought was a transmission problem. Pete tested it and discovered it's not a transmission fault but took time to diagnose what the actual problem is and transferred to our usual garage for fixing so he could explain the diagnosis mechanic to mechanic. Great service and reasonable charge.

I came in to auto transmissions about 2 months ago in regards to getting my partners car checked because I was told that the ignition coils should be checked after continuous misfiring and taking it in for a service. It took the guys in there all of 5 minutes to say that it was clearly not the ignition coils and that I was wasting my time coming in but should still get a service done on the transmission of the car. Fast forward to now we have been on a wild goose chase trying to figure out what was wrong based on what these guys have told us. We had nearly gone as far as to spend $2000 on repairing the car with our local mechanic who had no idea what else it could be because we all trusted that these guys at auto transmissions knew what they were talking about, being transmission specialists. Then one of our good friends who s dad is a mechanic took the car for a spin and refused to believe that it was nothing but the coils, which he then removed, tested and concluded that that was the issue. Just goes to show you really cannot trust anyone in this business. Be careful if you are taking your car to this place. We definitely won t be coming back.

An extremely bad experience!! This company is unreliable and not worth using! I had my vehicle booked in for a full service of the transmission. On the initial telephone booking all details of the vehicle were given. The booking was for 10a.m at which time I had the vehicle there. I was told the job would take about 3 hours and handed over the keys which means a contract for service has been struck between customer and company as at that time the company accepted the job.

As I live an hour from Christchurch I had to arrange transport while waiting for the job to be completed(no loan vehicle had been offered).
At 3p.m I phoned to see how the job was going - 5 hours after leaving the vehicle. only to be told at that time, the company can't do the job because the vehicle is too large!! Pete knew the exact size of the vehicle when accepting to do the job as it was explained to him at time of booking plus he physically saw it at the time of receiving it.

In fairness he did phone me at 1p.m and left a message saying they had a bit of an issue. I phoned back immediately and another staff member told me my job had been held up as there was a car stuck on the lift they needed so my job would be ready about 3p.m. At no time was I told the job would not be done until I talked to Pete @3p.m. In my veiw the company are in breach of contract plus I wasted a complete day!

My recommendation is to avoid this company like the plague and save yourself some grief from this unreliable and unprofessional company.

In fact why not try Precission Autos in Orbell Street Christchurch. These guys are awesome.

This is my 2nd time using the gearbox company's services. Very knowledgeable staff and easy to talk to. A detailed description of what they had fixed on my toyota hiace super custom van. A good turn around and the most important part of all, a good price. Would definitely use again in the future. Cheers, Damo.

This company took $5000 from us and left us with a transmission that is worse than it was when they started. They forgot to fill the transfer gear case when they gave it back to us. The sidesteps were fitted incorrectly back on the vehicle causing then to vibrate and rub on the body. The second time they "fixed" it, we found a puddle of oil under the vehicle after only 8 km of travel. We found that they had put wrong bolts in transfer/transmission which meant that there was no seal between them. It's unlikely that we would have gotten all the way home. On our way back home finally, the transmission overheated, grinding noises and constant whining noises were heard and they insist that it's not their problem!
DO NOT GO THERE, YOU WILL BE RIPPED OFF.
