Lovely ambience, attentive staff and great food. It is expensive so ideal for a special occasion. No young children allowed so be aware. We live to sit and talk after a meal and so were there for over 4 hours, and were not rushed out at all. All in all a very pleasant experience, and would highly recommend.

Had very poor experience yesterday, my birthday treat!
they overlooked our lobsters and my partner swears his steak was cooked and then ruined in the microwave as he asked for medium/well! The vegetables were not much better, flavour seeming to be in short supply!
Food gave us indigestion and wasn t cheap! Also strange policy of parking you chilled wine out of sight, so you can t see what you have left or pour yourself another if you cannot attract the waiters attention! Most annoying of all was when my partner did complain to the waiter, nothing was done! Not wanting a scene on my birthday we paid the hefty bill and bid a hasty retreat! We won t be going back !

It might be perceived as being "ever so Essex", as it can seem a bit flashy, but the setting is stunning, the restaurant is roomy, and the menu interesting - very much to my taste. View from the front: village cricket pitch. View from the rear: country fields and Canary Wharf in the distance. I would strongly recommend a visit to this restaurant.

Fantastic service.

I decided to be brave and order shell fish thermidor. I have had muscles before and hated them, but hoped that other shell fish and muscles cooked well would be another story.

Unfortunately - I now know that I just really don't like shell fish. The sauce was lovely and everything was clearly cooked beautifully, but I just don't like shell fish.

The staff were amazing and even though I explained that it was not the dish at fault, they took the dish off the bill because I hadn't eaten very much of it. We certainly didn't expect the restaurant to do this as the fault was with me, not the way the dish was prepared.

My husbands steak and my creme brulee were both superb.

If, unlike me - you like shell fish (or any of the many other fish dishes available) I am sure that you will have an extremely enjoyable meal.

Great location, lovely food. If I had to raise any slight criticism it would be that the service was so attentive as to be OTT at times, with staff pouncing to top your glass up as soon as you have had a mouthful of water. But perhaps that is just me, a d liking more relaxed atmosphere.

Lovely food, beautiful views, attentive service. Went with 3 friends. The staff paid special attention to my gluten free. Special printed menu, brought me gf bread without me asking, arranged for veg to be gf for all of us on the table. Staff very knowledgeable about all the food. Restaurant looked out on to open fields, lovely conservatory. Only one small criticism: the raspberry pavlova was too massive. Looked impressive but we couldn't get through it, too much cream- shame to waste food. But all the food was delicious.

Our first meal out since Christmas!! Food was excellent. There were 4 of us. We all chose from the set menu. I had Piri Piri Jumbo prawns, then Miso Cod with an additional side salad. The food was scrummy. Staff adhered to social distancing. Will go again once we have saved up for it.

I ve been to Alec s Several times and have always admired the quality service and food. However, after my recent visit yesterday I was very disappointed with our food which was brought over cold and the lack of attention from the waiting staff. I had to send the side orders back which was then brought back to me with a cold steak! Very disappointing.

Great Food as always but far too busy on Sundays. 3/1/16
Waited 45 mins. got drink order wrong, was expensive than normal, more european staff than normal, as we were leaving we found staff on the front steps talking and smoking, a disappointment for such a classy establishment,
Wonderful food!

Visited here last night, cannot believe we haven't been here before. We went with friends who recommended it and we are glad they did. The atmosphere was great, the staff were friendly, attentive but discreet. I had the king prawn pil pil followed by Dover sole both were excellent. Cannot wait to come again.

The turbot was over cooked! The skin was soggy. The starters were all ok. I was very disappointed to be honest. A fish resturant that over cooks it's fish and serves soggy skin. We won't be going back. It's NOT cheap so we expected much much more. The staff were very attentive and nice, although our waitress did not smile much. Very clean. Beautiful views. Ask Rick Stein to show the chef how to cook turbot.

Haven't been here for couple of years used to think it was fab, not anyone had to keep asking for glasses to refilled couldn't do it ourselves as they take bottle away, the starter was nice but the main was awful for what we had very over priced and although the young lad who served us was very nice he was clueless won't be going back

This is a lovely restaurant in a fantastic setting. The food was absolutely delicious, the soft shell crab in tempura batter and the plum tarte tatin were a triumph. The staff gave just the right amount of attention and were not overbearing. The prices are quite reasonable too. All in all my family and I had an enjoyable evening and we will definitely be visiting again in the future.

Have been twice now and couldn't fault it. Had a free glass of prosecco and canope when I took my daughter for her 19th birthday. Beautiful lush decor. I feel the price reflected the quality of the food. Every dish was beautifully prepared and executed. Book in advance, but worth the wait.

Can't fairly rate the food or decor or the majority of the staff. Our table was booked from 1230 until 1430 and we had to vacate the table by then. We turned up to the restaurant at 1210 and we could see they were still preparing for service. We asked if we could have a drink the bar tender said yes but a really off hand man told us we couldn't, he was extremely rude and said he needed at 'good half hour' to get ready. We decided to take our money elsewhere and when my wife went back to cancel the booking he continued to bully her until my son took her out. Went to Smith's of Ongar instead and had a great meal. I pity the Alec's staff, if that's how this guy talks to customers how must he talk to them?
