I would not recommened this gym!! Several administration errors resulted in random charges to their customers. When kindly asked to correct, their staff are unpleasant and are unwilling to refund their customers as a result of their own errors. Their gym weighs, bars, etc. are never cleaned or sterilized and have a unpleasant oder as a reault of microorganism, sweat and human grime build up. This is not a great place to concentrate on your work out routine. You will constantly wait in lines for machines and they let children into the weight room.

Several of the showers are absolutely nasty with thick layers of scum (see picture), lots of hair, and broken fixtures. Soap dispensers are constantly empty. No towels available inside the locker room, and the towels are frequently stained with mysterious bodily fluids. The hot tub is always filled with scum and hair. Lockers are all rusty and often don't latch shut. Members constantly drive the wrong way down parking lot aisles because the paint they use for the arrows wears off after a month. There is a sharp piece of rusty metal sticking out of the ground in the parking lot from a broken railing (see picture), which is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Floors in the workout area often have balls of dust floating around. Generally a very poorly maintained Y location. Some of this could be forgiven if this was a $20/mo club, but at $70/mo they really need to step up their game and hire staff that even remotely care about the state of the facilities. The David D. Hunting location needs to look to the newer Mary Free Bed location where staff at least actively clean during the day. I left more that one star because the desk staff are friendly and there is a decent amount of good equipment.

Terrible policies. This YMCA advertises supporting the community but they don't help their customers to save money. I was a member for 6 months, and I activated and payed for my membership ONLINE. However, when I went to cancel my membership online, I could NOT. I was required to go into the facility and fill out a paper form. I was not able to get into the facility to do this until 7 days prior to beginning of the next billing period and was then told I would be charged for the next months membership because I did not provide 14 days notice. They described that they had to send the forms in to their billing department and it takes awhile, even though they allow people to activate their membership immediately and pay ONLINE. I asked very nicely if they could please not charge me for the next month, but the manager said and I quote, "it's like a job, you have to put in your 2 weeks notice." She was very rude and unprofessional. Being a member of the YMCA is not like a job. It is a membership and all other memberships allow you to cancel you plan an anytime online. A weeks notice should be plenty of time for them not to bill me for the next month. They insisted that this information was in the sign on form (hidden in the middle of paragraphs). I did not feel to be a valued member of the facility or community that the YMCA strives to support. The YMCA franchise promotes their support for local community and their members, yet they take advantage of people in this manner to profit. I will never renew my membership at a Grand Rapids YMCA and will forever communicate me extremely poor experience here.

They could use another squat cage, but other than that have never had to wait for a piece of equipment. Always clean and staff are great. Worth more than the price if you go 5-6 days a week like me and do classes as well.

My favorite thing, hands down, about this gym is the parking! Not only is it hard to find a spot, when you do... better be driving a tiny/small eco car otherwise someone will hit your car and not care to leave a note or slam their car door into the side of your door when exiting/entering their vehicle. so basically walk there if you can, otherwise consider your vehicle trashed when going here.

I have been going there for about 2 months now, I like the variety they have to offer such as childcare, equipment, classes, ect. but the place is not clean at all. The floors are so dusty by the machines, and have noticed that only a select few staff members are customer friendly and there is only ONE life guard that is also very friendly. The others are not nice at all, and have been very rude to myself as well as my children. For how much I pay, I would expect the staff to be more professional.

4.5. Great staff, facilities, and classes/programs. Often very crowded and tight parking spots. Special shout out to the staff who always lower the basketball hoop at my 5yr old's request. They have an app for up-to-date facility schedules and info.

The only reason I go to the YMCA is to play pick-up basketball. But it seems no matter what evening I go, there's never more than one court open. It's very frustrating. I've started going to the Mary Free Bed YMCA more, even though it's a 15 minute drive for me.

The downtown ymca has its pros and cons about it. What I do like is that they offer a wide variety of classes and they have friendly instructors. I also like that they offer childcare and for the most part I park pretty close almost every time. But some cons would be they don t even have a properly working scale in the women s locker room, they put WAY to much chlorine in the pool that it s unbearable to even be in there. And i think they should extend the childcare hours at least by a half hour, so we can get more out of our workout.

The staff is always really nice and welcoming! The people in the daycare take excellent care of my son. The only thing I don t like is the family locker room should be a bit bigger and sometimes fathers with their teenage kids (like 15-16 years old) use the family locker room which makes it a little uncomfortable for me with my 3 year old.

My wife and I have been members for about a month....

My wife and I have been members for about a month. So far has been good except for just this morning on a Saturday. I volunteer at the hospital on Saturday morning so I came in for a swim and set in the hot tub. Little did I know after I got my swimsuit on took a shower walked to the pool and there was a class going on. Nothing up in the locker room saying that through was a class in the pool loud music couldn't relax told my one lifeguard that it would be okay to go in the pool but they do do laps around it for the class. Told by another lifeguard 10 minutes later that you would have to probably go swim in the lazy river which is on the other side of the pool because they have class right now. But they do go round the entire pool. They were not rude to me but I feel their Shelby should be a different way to let people know there's a class going on before they get there soon and wanted to take a nice relaxing swim. There should be another way to let guest know when classes are like put a big sign up right before you go into the locker room. I was in the pool area for maybe 10 minutes just a waste of my time. You should have classes before or after pool hours or change your flowers or do something to let people know. I have arthritis in my legs and back and it helps to relax in a fool. Lake I said both times I'm happy here but this morning was a very bad experience just think that you should be considerate to all your guest's.. please excuse my misspelling I used voice to text is faster for me.
