Staff
The majority of the staff were very nice and helpful, though some struggle with English. Only 2 or 3 seemed rude or checked-out.
Location
The resort is located down an alley that exits directly to the main road that runs along Kuta Beach. It's a 5 minute walk to the beach, 7-15 minute walk to everything else on the strip. Walking down the blind alley felt a little sketchy at night, and there are ALWAYS 2-7 men standing at the entrance harassing you about booking a taxi. I wouldn't feel safe letting my wife walk alone.
Amenities
Restaurant- Decent food, surprised by the quality of even the late night room service. Daily free breakfast was good as well, though only a few items rotate so it gets boring eating the same food every day.
Bars- the bars are vexing to me. There is a bar NEAR the pool and a swim-up bar IN the pool. The mixed drinks *taste* good but clearly have little/watered-down booze in them though each drink is an average of $8-12 USD. Definitely not worth the prices. I had 4 different drinks in an hour and didn t feel a thing. Another HUGE issue with their bars is that you can't charge anything to the room, unless you first leave a *cash deposit* with the front desk. Also, you can't open ANY kind of tab. So unless you just leave a ton of cash with the front desk to be used as a deposit (which nobody even mentioned when we checked in), you have to pay for each drink each time you order. Because you can't charge to the room and nobody sets up the cash deposit, the swim-up bar goes unused all day because no one is swimming with money in their pockets.
Spa- the spa was great. If you've never had a Bali full body massage before then prepare for an hour of getting your butt and upper thighs squeezed and probed. The spa feels legit and all, but I still spent the 1.5 hour COUPLES massage worried that the masseuse was going to slip a digit into me since 2/3 of my backside was exposed and her hands were all over. It makes for a nervous yet memorable time. If you're uncomfortable with your body, the full-body isn t for you.
Room cleanliness
Tropical area, expect geckos roaming around your room at night and the occasional roach coming up through the drain. However, don't expect the cleaning staff to wipe the gecko poop off of the walls. The cleaning staff does an OK job of tidying up the room, but during Our 7 day stay we watched the poop smears really start to add up. Very noticeable and easily cleaned with a few wipes of a damp rag, but no. In the room they initially had set up for us with roses on the bed and a basket of fruit (I paid an extra $350 usd to upgrade the room for our honeymoon) we walked into the room to find literal PILES of gecko/mouse feces in the room corners, under the bed and on the carpet. It was horrible. I demanded my money back immediately, but they instead put us in a different room (quick to take your money, desperate to keep it by any means necessary). Plus, the "special" room they had set up for us/charged us for was right up against a construction site and was literally vibrating and shaking the whole time we were there. In contrast, a resort in Phuket last year upgraded us to their best possible room for free as a surprise because it was our DATING ANNIVERSARY. There s a bar for outstanding service, and Wina is taking a nap somewhere underneath it.
Our initial experience with this hotel went from nightmare to OK. There are certainly better places in the area, but if you're just looking for a cheaper basic room and a nice pool in this area, then Wina isn't the worst option. I would absolutely recommend going somewhere else if you are in Bali celebrating a special event or even looking for a good "resort" experience, and if Wina can fix all of their issues then they could someday be a great choice. But for now they are just too convoluted, overpriced and below-average to earn more than 3 stars or my recommendation.
