Wimbledon Guild: A Local Charity Making a Difference in Merton

Wimbledon Guild is a local charity that has been making a difference in the lives of people across Merton for over 100 years. The charity's mission is to combat social isolation and loneliness, help those in need, and enable older people to be active and healthy.

The charity was founded in 1907 by a group of local residents who wanted to make a positive impact on their community. Since then, Wimbledon Guild has grown into an organization that provides vital services and support to thousands of people every year.

One of the key areas where Wimbledon Guild makes a difference is combating social isolation and loneliness. The charity recognizes that many people in the community feel isolated or lonely, whether due to age, disability, or other factors. To address this issue, Wimbledon Guild offers a range of services designed to bring people together and foster connections.

For example, the charity runs several social clubs for older adults where they can meet new friends and participate in activities like art classes, exercise classes, and day trips. These clubs provide an important sense of community for older adults who may otherwise feel isolated or alone.

In addition to combating social isolation and loneliness, Wimbledon Guild also helps those in need. The charity provides financial assistance to individuals facing hardship due to illness or other circumstances. This assistance can take many forms – from helping with rent payments or utility bills to providing food vouchers or clothing vouchers.

Wimbledon Guild also operates a food bank that provides emergency food parcels for individuals who are struggling financially. This service is particularly important given the rising levels of poverty across the UK – according to recent statistics from The Trussell Trust (a national network of food banks), there was an 18% increase in demand for emergency food parcels between April 2020- March 2021 compared with the previous year.

Another area where Wimbledon Guild makes an impact is enabling older people to be active and healthy. The charity recognizes that staying active is important for physical and mental health, particularly as people age. To support this goal, Wimbledon Guild offers a range of exercise classes and activities designed specifically for older adults.

For example, the charity runs a falls prevention program that helps older adults reduce their risk of falling by improving balance and strength. The program includes exercise classes as well as home assessments to identify potential hazards in the home.

Wimbledon Guild also operates a befriending service that matches volunteers with older adults who may be feeling lonely or isolated. Volunteers visit their matched person regularly to provide companionship and support – this can include anything from going for walks together to playing board games or simply having a cup of tea and a chat.

Overall, Wimbledon Guild is an organization that makes a real difference in the lives of people across Merton. Whether through combating social isolation and loneliness, helping those in need, or enabling older people to be active and healthy – the charity's work is vital for building stronger communities where everyone can thrive.

If you're interested in supporting Wimbledon Guild's work, there are many ways you can get involved. You could volunteer your time at one of the charity's social clubs or events; make a donation to help fund their services; or even organize your own fundraising event on behalf of the charity.

Whatever way you choose to get involved, know that your support will make a real difference in the lives of people across Merton – helping them feel more connected, supported, and empowered to live their best lives possible.
